To join this course you must be a reasonably proficient rider but the emphasis is on being able to lead others safely, not your own skills and speed.

You won’t find a course like this anywhere else – but we believe in the potential of young people and know that business doesn’t just happen in the office! Taking enthusiastic riders and giving you the complete set of skills to go on and share your riding passion with others, this is the perfect introduction to sports coaching and leadership. With an accredited qualification as part of the course, our theory and practical classes will leave you feeling prepared to start giving your own courses using our tried-and-tested model.
Basic Mountain Bike Instructor Training: Learn to be a safe ride leader who can then take people out on rides, manage groups safely, deal with minor mechanical breakdowns, injury or incident.
- Theory: Risk assessment, access law, conservation and land usage, ‘teaching to teach’ (bike maintenance, riding flat ground, hill ascent/descent, road safety). The 5 point bike safety check and first aid.
- Practice: Ride a mixture of single track and cross-country routes with basic jumps and simple obstacles.
- Navigation skills
Level 2 MIAS Assessment: Each rider leads the group over one leg of a route
- Giving group briefing and instructions
- Leading the group efficiently and safely with simple manoeuvring and small jumps
- You will receive continual feedback to support your improvement
- 1-1 discussions ensure you are confident and ready to go
- Log book and certification included

- How to run an outdoor skills session – teaching and delivering activities, aim and outcomes, imparting information

The Mountain Bike Leader Level Two (MBL2) – Technical Terrain qualification is accredited by the Mountain-bike Instructors Award Scheme (MIAS). This qualification allows you to lead groups into open country with the potential hazards that surround such terrain, including forest trail routes up to red standard or wild areas up to 600m in elevation. Your MIAS Instructor
With years of mountain biking and instructing experience, your instructor for the week is a larger-than-life character full of knowledge and passion for riding. A Sheffield resident and often found cruising the dirt trails and single-track of our local Peak District, he really lives and breathes mountain biking and some other extreme sports too! Over the week he will break down the necessary skills into bite-size easy-to-learn chunks mixed with practical teaching along some of our favourite local routes. Relaxed and supporting, he makes learning simple and will inspire you and bolster your confidence!

This course fulfils all requirements of the DofE GOLD Residential section.
The abundance of cycling venues in the immediate area makes us perfectly placed to offer up this awesome opportunity for all avid trail riders. A series of relevant coaching sessions will cover key aspects including safety checks, skills assessment, ride safety, handling skills, bike mechanics, riding safety, first aid and Insurance considerations. Throughout the week we will guide you on a series of group rides in the local area and provide tailored advice to help your performance.
Participants are required to bring their own bicycle plus clothing as suits them to ride in, joint pads, including cycling kit, suitable bad weather gear, footwear, tracksuit/ shorts to keep warm in, drinks bottles etc. If you have any special kit for your personal needs (such as hydration fluids and medical kit), then please do bring these along too!
The course cost £450.00 includes all food, accommodation, Mountain Bike L5 Leader, supporting Leaders, insurances, residential activity & development booklet, assessment, MIAS logbook and course report.
Each of our residentials features a friendly arrivals, introductions and team building session to help you settle in and get to know the group. At the end of the week, one-to-one evaluations, reflections and summary session allow you to see everything you’ve gained and plan your next adventures. In addition to meeting the requirements of the DofE Gold Award, our residentials can also qualify you for a John Muir Award by giving you the chance to connect with, enjoy and care for wild places. With many wild places to discover in our immediate vicinity, this award involves spending some time exploring a natural area, contributing to its conservation and sharing your experience through a medium of your choice. This will require some light group work ongoing throughout the week, involving conservation such as community maintenance, a litter pick or some other action which gives back to the local area.
